Coup in Haiti

As I’m writing this, I’m listening to Maxine Waters and Randal Robinson describing what Jean-Bertrand Aristide said to them in a pair of phone calls. The gist of it is that the U.S. military is actively supporting the right-wing coup, led by an ex-death-squad leader.

I have to wonder how big a story this will be in the U.S. Specifically, will the corporate media handle this story as poorly as it handled the Chavez near-coup. Will they question why nothing of this nature happened under Clinton, but now that another Reaganite is in charge, there has been one successful coup and one attempted coup on left-leaning — and elected — Latin American presidents? Will they question the involvement of the NED and other organizations funded by U.S. tax dollars in the installation of an accused war criminal — especially in light of the $500,000,000,000 the U.S. government is spending which it doesn’t have (or the more than $7,000,000,000,000 of total debt)?

The worst thing about this is that it highlights again exactly how fucked up the <a href="/rants/index.php?page=voting.html”>trustee model of government is. Not only can Bush help overthrow a foreign government, but we can’t do shit about it for at least another 6 months. God help us if that man gets elected in 2004, and doesn’t have to worry about re-election.
